POLICE: Weekly Police Blotter

HARASSMENT: On February 2nd at approximately 12:03 a.m. police responded to a report of physical altercation at a local bar in Koppel Borough. Police learned that the suspect left, and later returned to the scene to speak to police. Investigation is ongoing according to a criminal complaint. Ellwood Area Family Center Hosting Youth Baseball Clinic

The Ellwood Area Family Center will be hosting a youth baseball clinic in March. The goal is to enhance youth baseball in the community and will be open to players ages 9-12. “Our goal is to enhance youth baseball in the community,” says Family Center director, John DiBuono. “Proper fundamentals and baseball techniques will be taught.  Base running, throwing, catching, and batting stance will be the focus of the clinic.” The clinic will be run by Coach Jeff Fotia, former Ellwood City high school baseball coach who won multiple section titles and a PIAA state championship in 2003. Residents at Risk of Losing Trash Service Because of Delinquent Bills

During Ellwood City Borough Council’s Regular Meeting, Ellwood City’s Borough Manager Kevin Swogger said that some residents are at risk to have their trash service ended because of delinquent bills. Swogger said that residents are still responsible for paying their trash bill in the winter months, and unlike with electric accounts that get a grace period during cold winter months, trash bills that are four months delinquent will see an end to service. “If you are not paying your trash bill and are over four months delinquent, you need to pay your bill,” he said. Quilts and the Underground Railroad Discussed at ECAHS Feb. Meeting

More than 50 members and guests of the Ellwood City Area Historical Society were treated to a presentation of how quilts were used as guidance by the underground railroad. The presentation was given by the Reverend Jim Swanson to a crowd gathered at the meeting of the Ellwood City Area Historical Society on Tuesday, February 11th. According to Swanson, quilts were utilized to send messages and provide directions to runaway slaves before and during the civil war. The messages were based on the designs of the quilt. Ellwood City Fire Department Among Many To Receive State Grants

Rep. Aaron Bernstine (R-Butler/Lawrence) announced Wednesday local fire companies and emergency medical services (EMS) agencies were awarded state grants totaling nearly $216,000 from the Fire Company and Emergency Medical Services Grant Program. The program was created by the Legislature and is administered by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and Office of the State Fire Commissioner (OSFC).
