Pennsylvania 2nd Highest Among States Affected by Salmonella Infections Linked to Coconut

According to the Center for Disease Control’s website, Pennsylvania is the second highest among the nine affected states for illness caused by a recent Salmonella outbreak. The site says that the CDC, public health and regulatory officials in several states, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to Coconut Tree Brand frozen Shredded Coconut. Illnesses started on dates ranging from May 11, 2017 to November 4, 2017. Ill people range in age from 1 year to 82, with a median age of 19. Among ill people, 19 (76%) are male….


Syrian Visits Riverside, Discusses Middle Eastern Life With Students

On Thursday, January 18, Mr. Osama Alomar visited Riverside High School to speak to Mrs. Boots’ World Cultures classes, Mrs. Frank’s English classes, and Mrs. Pinchot’s AP Journalism classes. His visit is thanks to a generous grant from the Riverside Community Education Foundation. Mrs. Boots’ World Cultures classes are completing a unit on the Middle East, so had plenty of questions for Mr. Alomar about his life in Syria, his opinion of President Assad, and his assessment of the violence in Syria. Lincoln High School Cuts Costs, No More Paper Report Cards

In an attempt to cut thousands in costs, the Ellwood City School Board has decided to stop giving out paper report cards at Lincoln High School, effective with the latest nine-weeks grading period. Parents and guardians are encouraged to instead view their child’s grades through the online platform that is already in place; those without access to the internet or who prefer the paper reports can make individual requests to the school to continue receiving hard copies. Temperatures to Rise, Fall

This week has been much warmer than last, and by Saturday we should be seeing temperatures into the 50’s. Unfortunately the mild temperatures will not last; according to the Weather Channel, Friday will see a high of 51 degrees, Saturday back down to a high of 21, and Sunday with a high of 18. River of the Year: Connoquenessing Named Runner-Up

The public has been on the edge of their seats waiting for the results of the River of the Year contest, which were finally announced this week.
