Ellwood City Borough Council February Meeting Brief

The following is a brief summary of the Ellwood City Borough Council meeting held on Feb. 15, 2016. Announcements Picnic shelter reservations will begin on the fourth Monday in February (Feb. 22) for Borough residents and beginning on the fourth Monday in March (Mar. 28) for non-Borough residents. Commendations Loccisano’s Golden Dawn grocery store was presented with a commendation for its 100 year anniversary. Appointments/Resignations A motion was passed appointing Joseph Trocci to the Recreation Board for a term expiring Dec. 31, 2018. The motion passed 6-1 with Vice President David DeCaria dissenting. Leslie Sabo (Sims Street) Bridge Safety Inspection Operations

Bridge Safety Inspection operations on the Leslie Sabo (Sims Street) Bridge in the Borough of Ellwood City will begin on Friday, Feb. 19, 2016. The work will be completed between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Traffic will be maintained through the work area but expect minor delays. It’s anticipated that the work will be completed by the end of the workday on Friday, Feb. 19, 2016.

Corona D’Italia Valentines Meeting

Corona D’Italia Lodge #807 held their monthly meeting Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 5 p.m. at Pizza Joe’s. The session began with a pizza luncheon hosted by President Clemmy Sirimarco and served by trustee Pudue LaCava, member Jackie Court and sentinel Lois DiFrischia. The business session followed with financial reports presented by treasurer Louise Vitullo. She noted that 2016 yearly dues are payable by contacting her. Orator Valerie Valentino, Chairman of the Corona D’Italia Memorial Scholarship, presented the requirements for senior students to apply for the $500 Lodge scholarship. Winter Storm Results in First Snow Day of the School Year for Ellwood City

At the Ellwood City Area school board meeting last Thursday, Feb 11, Superintendent Joe Mancini said that students will still have Monday off because there hasn’t been a snow day yet. A few school board members responded with, “Don’t say that yet!” It was semi-prescient. Students did indeed have Monday, designated as a snow-makeup day, off. Ironically, the first snow day of the year came yesterday, giving students a four-day weekend. Both Ellwood and Riverside districts had cancellations. Police: Employee Steals Money from Customer Transactions

Employee Steals Money Over Three Month Period A Beaver Falls man was accused of stealing $1,499.56 from B&B Express on 324 Lawrence Ave. According to the criminal complain, James Kosto, as an employee of B&B, would pretend to place money in the cash register during customer transactions but would actually place the money in his pocket. This occurred between Dec. 17, 2014 and March 8, 2015. On Oct. 29, 2015, Kosto admitted to stealing money to investigating officers. He was given until Feb. 1, 2016 to pay back the money he had stolen, which he failed to do. On Feb….

Relay for Life Upcoming Events

The Circle of Friends Relay For Life team is hosting a Paint Party on Saturday, March 12 as a fundraiser for the next Women’s Retreat. Come join them at Fellowship Hall in North Sewickley Presbyterian Church on Chapel Drive beginning at 2 p.m. The party will be fun and a beautiful painting will be completed by everyone there. Hitched and Unhitched: Heart of Winter Edition

Hitched and Unhitched has been updated for the winter months of December and January. The region experienced a mild winter full of mud instead of snow. Overall, the number of couples making radical life decisions via marriage or divorce was rather low. Eight couples in the Ellwood City area sealed their love with the bonds of matrimony and nine couples filed for divorce. Check them out with this edition of Hitched and Unhitched.

Mayor Presents Commendation to Loccisano’s for a Century of Business

On Tuesday, Feb. 11, Mayor Anthony J. Court presented Loccisano’s Golden Dawn grocery a commendation for a 100 years of family business in Ellwood City. Members of the fourth generation generation of the Loccisano’s family received the commendation from, as well as a plaque from the Ellwood City Area Chamber of Commerce. “We are here to recognize not one year, not five years, not 25 years, but 100 years of family-operated business in Ellwood City,” Chamber Director Ray Santillo said.
