Bridge Safety Inspection operations on the Leslie Sabo (Sims Street) Bridge in the Borough of Ellwood City will begin on Friday, Feb. 19, 2016. The work will be completed between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Traffic will be maintained through the work area but expect minor delays. It’s anticipated that the work will be completed by the end of the workday on Friday, Feb. 19, 2016.
Corona D’Italia Lodge #807 held their monthly meeting Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 5 p.m. at Pizza Joe’s. The session began with a pizza luncheon hosted by President Clemmy Sirimarco and served by trustee Pudue LaCava, member Jackie Court and sentinel Lois DiFrischia. At the Ellwood City Area school board meeting last Thursday, Feb 11, Superintendent Joe Mancini said that students will still have Monday off because there hasn’t been a snow day yet. A few school board members responded with, “Don’t say that yet!” It was semi-prescient. Students did indeed have Monday, designated as a snow-makeup day, off. Ironically, the first snow day of the year came yesterday, giving students a four-day weekend. Both Ellwood and Riverside districts had cancellations. Employee Steals Money Over Three Month Period A Beaver Falls man was accused of stealing $1,499.56 from B&B Express on 324 Lawrence Ave. According to the criminal complain, James Kosto, as an employee of B&B, would pretend to place money in the cash register during customer transactions but would actually place the money in his pocket. This occurred between Dec. 17, 2014 and March 8, 2015. On Oct. 29, 2015, Kosto admitted to stealing money to investigating officers. He was given until Feb. 1, 2016 to pay back the money he had stolen, which he failed to do. On Feb….

Hitched and Unhitched has been updated for the winter months of December and January. The region experienced a mild winter full of mud instead of snow. Overall, the number of couples making radical life decisions via marriage or divorce was rather low. On Tuesday, Feb. 11, Mayor Anthony J. Court presented Loccisano’s Golden Dawn grocery a commendation for a 100 years of family business in Ellwood City. Members of the fourth generation generation of the Loccisano’s family received the commendation from, as well as a plaque from the Ellwood City Area Chamber of Commerce. “We are here to recognize not one year, not five years, not 25 years, but 100 years of family-operated business in Ellwood City,” Chamber Director Ray Santillo said.
Demolition of the properties west of St. Agatha nears completion while deconstruction of the church is underway. The windows facing Spring Avenue have been removed, and crews have been dismantling the inside as well. According to local CVS sources, the new pharmacy is expected to open sometime next fall and the current CVS in Franklin Plaza will relocate to the new location.
