PHOTOS: Five Ellwood Wrestlers Victorious At MAC Championships

Five Wolverine wrestlers were victorious in their final matches at the Midwestern Athletic Conference Tournament, which was held January 6-7 at Hopewell High School. In championship matches, at the 132 pound weight class – Ellwood City’s Tyler Alberts collected a major decision and victory over Jake Pail, Freedom, 8-0. In third-place consolation matches, at 120-pound weight class – Tyler Baird was victorious by decision over Nick Reconnu, Montour, 5-1.  In the 145 weight class – Austin Walley, Ellwood City used a major decision to beat Austin Dohl, Quaker Valley, 17-3. Police: Man Rescued from Freezing Water After Fleeing Police

Joseph Boots, 41, of Hillside Ave., in Wayne Township was rescued from frigid waters early Friday morning after fleeing from police. Boots, who already had an outstanding warrant issued in Lawrence County, fled from officers after a domestic dispute which occurred between him and a female who officers said was unrecognizable due to the severe swelling in her face. Officers noticed a suspicious individual running into the woods along the Connoquenessing Creek, and a bystander identified Boots as the fleeing man. The Riverside Panthers used a balance scoring attack Friday night in their 66-51 rivalry victory over Ellwood City. Riverside was led by three players in double digits including Justin Baust who finished with a game-high 15 points.  Baust was joined in double figures by Gunnar Boehm (14 points) and Jesse Fornataro (11 points). Bernstine Announces Weekly Veterans Assistance Outreach in Ellwood City Office

ELLWOOD CITY – Rep. Aaron Bernstine (R-Beaver/Butler/Lawrence) will begin hosting veterans assistance hours every week at his district office in Ellwood City. Jesse Putnam, service officer with the Lawrence County Department of Veterans Affairs, will be available every Thursday at the office, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome. Gretchen Shaffer, a 2015 graduate of Riverside High School, recently received a $1000.00 scholarship from Northwestern Pennsylvania Society of Plastics Engineers. Notice of Tax Office Hours

As of Jan. 16, 2017, the tax office located in the municipal building will only be open one day a week. They request you call ahead to see when they are there, 724-758-9673. Regular hours of Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9a.m.-3p.m. will resume March 1, 2017.


1954 Lincoln Class Committee December Meeting

Pudue LaCava hosted the 1954 Lincoln Class Committee for their annual Christmas Dinner on Thursday, Dec. 1 at her Mt. Vernon Drive home. The festivities began at 2p.m. with an Italian ravioli dinner, prepared and served by Ilene Gardner and LaCava, with continuous serving through the afternoon hours as the local and out of town members arrived.
