December 2017 Regular Meeting Recap: 2018 Budget Approved

Yesterday was the December regular meeting for Ellwood City Borough Council, and also the last meeting for Council President Connie MacDonald, Vice President David DeCaria, and Councilman Brad Ovial. The newly elected council members will be taking their places starting next month. Visitors Paul Dici praised the work of the street department for their quick and thorough work during the snow storm last week. On the flip side, he scolded the residents of Ellwood City who parked on the side of the streets, making the snow clearing messy and less effective, when they could have been parking in their driveway….

Bizarre Post Appears on Local Craigslist Pet Classifieds

A post, which has been shared in several local pet advocacy groups in the local area has many pet-parents concerned. The post, which was published on the Akron-Canton Ohio area pets community by an anonymous poster, is below along with more information. Craigslist is a web platform where users can anonymously post in the forums and classifieds to keep their identities safe while connecting with the community; unfortunately some people take advantage of the lax site-moderation, resulting in offensive and alarming posts like this. School Choirs to Perform Carols at Community Plaza

On Wednesday, December 20th, 2017 there will be two local choirs performing Christmas carols at the Community Plaza. At 10:30a.m. the Ellwood City Area School District Concert Choir will be performing, conducted by Felicia Greco, Senior High Choral Director, and at 11:30a.m. the Laurel Area School District Choir will be performing, conducted by Kristen Clingerman. Like all Community Plaza concerts, the event is free to attend.

Free Clothing Closet Tonight

The Lillyville Church of God, 408 Hickernell Road, Ellwood City, PA 16117, is hosting a free Clothing Closet tonight from 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm. Ellwood City Wolverines Fall Short Against Shenango in Saturday’s Game

New Castle, PA – In spite of a solid performance from Anthony Roth with 17 points, Lincoln fell to Shenango 83-53. Roth led the charge for Ellwood City Wolverines‘s offense, scoring 17 points, with seven points during the third period. He also contributed five rebounds and one steal. Two other players also racked up double digit scores for Lincoln. Sean Busby put up 13 points. Broc Boariu hit two three-pointers and scored 10 points total. Also chipping in for Lincoln were Rick Pitrelli (7 points, 2 rebounds), Ryan Busby (4 points, 6 rebounds), and Rocco Sesti (2 points, 5 rebounds)….

Old Photo Friday: Borough Property Nativity Scene

Although the photos are not very old, they are certainly a thing of the past after a Wisconsin-based anti-religion group threatened to sue the Borough of Ellwood City in 2011 if they didn’t take down the traditional nativity display, which has since been absent from the property. The group, Freedom From Religion Foundation, promotes nontheism and defends the constitutional separation between religion and government, their website states. The last year the nativity was standing on Borough property was in 2011, after the council members voted 4-2 in favor of removing the scene from municipal property beginning in 2012. A council…

A few days ago, I was sitting in the waiting room at a doctor’s office in Cranberry Township, where I saw a magazine that had articles about the Christmas season, giving in kindness and love, and trying to reach out to others with gifts that keep on giving. Every year the Ellwood City United Fund asks for the community’s generous support so we can continue to help our friends, neighbors and family members need. Calvin Presbyterian Hosts “Blue Christmas” Service

Calvin Presbyterian Church, 615 Crescent Avenue on Sunday, December 17 at 6:30 p.m. is hosting a “Blue Christmas” service for those in attendance to remember their loved ones. This is an ideal worship service for anyone in the community who is grieving or struggling in any way this Christmas season. There will be special music, an opportunity to light a candle in remembrance of a loved one, and a Word of hope. Light refreshments and opportunity for prayer will follow.

PHOTOS: Winter Wonderland in Ellwood City

You either love it or you hate it, but regardless of how you feel about the snow there’s no denying it has blanketed Ellwood City overnight. Last year during December we had hardly any snow and the average temperatures were in the 50’s and upwards. Despite this year’s snow, there are many townspeople out and about, some cleaning their cars off and others going in and out of the stores on Lawrence Avenue.
