Ellwood’s Petrak and Lott Advance to Track States

The 300 meter hurdles and 1600 meter run are two of the most physically taxing events in track and field. The hurdles not only requires one to sprint an extended distance, but navigate hurdles as well. The 1600 (approximately one mile) requires speed, endurance and a considerable amount of strategy to pace the four laps and outlast the competition. Ellwood has an athlete advancing in each event. Junior Taylor Petrak placed fourth at the Class AA WPIAL finals in the girls 300 hurdles with a time of 47.35 seconds and junior Billy Lott placed seventh in the boys 1600 with…

Stiefel Hockey League Seeking Donations for Rink

The Stiefel Hockey League is seeking donations from local businesses to cover the cost of constructing boards for the community hockey rink in Stiefel Park. Businesses that donate a minimum of $100 will have their name displayed on a sign outside of the rink listing sponsors. The boards are built by the league’s hockey players. Earlier this spring, the Ellwood City Borough Council repaved the rink. However, the siding had deteriorated and needed completely replaced. League associate fundraiser Francis Todorich emphasized that the rink is for the entire community, and the members have spent several days a week working on…

Opinion: More on Accreditation and Petty Politics

In last week’s column, I mentioned one of my primary sources of knowledge is works by accredited academics, so I’ll elaborate slightly. Generally, when people use a word in the correct context, they mean the accepted definition of that word. That’s how language works. For example, “The Battle Cry of Freedom,” is a single-volume history of the American Civil War written by James McPherson, the Professor Emritus of American History at Princeton University. I can read the book with confidence that it will have an accurate account of the American Civil War. On another level, “The Civil War: A Narrative”…

Lady Wolverines Defeat Neshannock for Third Time in First Round of Playoffs

Defeating a team three times is no easy feat, and the Ellwood City softball team had to do just that in the first round of playoffs. “It is always tough to play a team three times in one season, especially a team like Neshannock with the success they have had in the past,” head coach Gary Rozanski said. The Lady Lancers best chance at having a win over Ellwood was early season when they fell short in an 11-8 game. After that, the Lady Wolverines edged Neshannock 13-3. On Wednesday, in a playoff game at Seneca Valley, the undefeated Lady…

Ellwood City Family Video Closed Operations on Monday

The Ellwood City Family Video, located on 807 Lawrence Ave., closed operations on Monday. The store’s function will be absorbed by two other Family Video locations in New Castle and New Brighton. Employees at the Ellwood store will keep their jobs at the other locations. The Family Video chain, based in Glenview, Ill., owns the property, which will be rented to DaVita Kidney Care, a division of DaVita Health Partners. It is unknown when the care center will open. “It was the only local place to rent movies and games because, let’s be honest, Netflix doesn’t have everything,” Stephani Damato,…

The 3 Rivers Comicon and the Man Behind It

by Anthony Nocera and Jonathan Cortez 3 Rivers Comicon, a two day comic book convention, is coming to Pittsburgh this weekend. Todd McDevitt, the organizer and host, was once a teenager who got into collecting comics thanks to his friend, Matt Brady. While still in high school, Todd became intrigued by the business side of comic books. His business started without an actual location as he simply sold comic books in school and through mail. The first physical New Dimension Comics was in a small storefront by PeeWee’s Hot Dog Shop. Todd’s business would continually grow and eventually become the…

Ellwood School District Survey Taking Input from Parents and Students

The Ellwood City Area School District board has implemented a survey seeking input from parents, students and teachers. The surveys are three to five questions and primarily open-ended. The parent and student surveys can be accessed by anyone on the district website. The purpose of the survey is to gauge the district’s strengths and weaknesses and gather new ideas. Initially there was no end date for the surveys, but at Thursday’s meeting, Vice President Matt Morella proposed the surveys end on June 2, the last day of the school year, which was approved.

Opinion: Already Burnt Out from Following Election Season

The presidential election season is approaching halftime, when there will be a slight break before the respective party nominees launch full fledged attacks against each other. I’m already burnt out. Normally, I don’t watch or read the news beyond the bare minimum of knowing what major events are going on around the world. Back when I used to follow the news, I came to the conclusion that everything is simultaneously racist, not racist, good for the economy, bad for the economy, good for democracy, bad for democracy, something that everybody should be talking about, something that nobody should be talking…

Ellwood School Board Takes No Action on Athletic Director

Over a dozen visitors filled into the board room on Monday, May 9 to support Athletic Director Darrin Morella, who had offered his letter of resignation to the Ellwood City Area School Board. Although approving the resignation was slated as part of yesterday’s voting meeting agenda, the motion was removed in the interim. Because Morella’s contract is a personnel matter, it is exempt from Pennsylvania’s Open Records Law. The board may hold discussions under executive session and doesn’t have to provide information to the public. However, several visitor comments and unofficial statements indicated a raise was at the heart of…

Opinion: Library’s “Write On” Celebrated the Difficult Path of Writing and Publication

Two Fridays ago, on April 29, the Ellwood City Area Public Library hosted an authors’ fair. There were 22 published authors, which only represented about half of the total authors in the area. That alone is an impressive figure, and it was matched by a decent turnout of supportive Ellwoodians. Even though my current literary ambitions are on a hiatus, I appreciate the recognition from the community, as I’m sure my 21 colleagues do. Becoming a published author is no easy task. Getting published by a major publishing house is a nigh unobtainable feat. First, you have to write a…
