An art exhibit and a poignant presentation highlighting America’s 250-year history were enjoyed by 52 members and guests of the Ellwood City Area Historical Society at its annual Season Kick-Off Dinner held Monday, Sept. 14, at the Connoquenessing Country Club.
Society President Bob Morabito welcomed those in attendance and recognized the organization’s officers, board members and many volunteers whose time and dedication help make the work of the Ellwood City Area Historical Society possible. He also called for a moment of silence in memory of Lois Liebendorfer, the Society’s longtime former secretary and dedicated volunteer, who passed away earlier in 2026.
The Pledge of Allegiance and invocation were led by Society board member and past president Everett Bleakney. Joining Morabito as narrators for the evening’s program were Chip Campbell, Eric Krchmar and Beth Wyszomierski.
Following an outstanding dinner buffet prepared by the Country Club staff, members and guests enjoyed a narrated America 250 presentation tracing the nation’s 250-year journey from the Declaration of Independence to the present day.
Entitled “The Inheritance of Liberty: 1776–2026,” the presentation highlighted Ellwood City’s place in the American story and the Historical Society’s responsibility to preserve the voices and stories of local men and women who helped shape that history.
Rather than focusing solely on presidents, battles and famous documents, the program emphasized how successive generations of ordinary Americans defended, strengthened and preserved the freedoms they inherited. Major events including the War of 1812, the Civil War, World War II and the Vietnam War were connected with Ellwood City’s own contributions, from wartime industry and the home front to the sacrifices of local servicemen. The presentation’s central message was that liberty is an inheritance passed from one generation to the next, carrying with it the responsibility to preserve both freedom and the memory of those who defended it.
Also featured as part of the America 250 celebration was a display of patriotic artwork by John Trumbull, often called the “Painter of the Revolution.” The collection was presented by local art enthusiast the Rev. Rob Guy.
Angela Hyde, Rosemary Morgan and Cindy Morabito greeted guests at the door and conducted the evening’s 50/50 raffle, which was won by Lynn Campbell.
The Historical Society’s programming will continue with its Oct. 12 monthly meeting featuring Susan Lautenbacher of Lark Enterprises. On Nov. 9, Vaughn Hudspath will present “Holidays in a Small Town.”
The Monday evening programs are held at the History Center, 310 Fifth St., Ellwood City, beginning at 7 p.m. All programs are free and open to the public.
