Service Dog Rescued From 80+ Foot Down River Embankment

A team of amazing rescue workers helped rescue a service dog that went missing in the community.

After four days of search, rescue workers spotted the 11-year-old Goldendoodle, Winston, deep in the woods

According to a social media post and information shared with EllwoodCity.org, Winston was reportedly about 80+ ft down a river embankment in North Sewickley Township near the Koppel Bridge and over halfway down to the railroad tracks.

It is reported the dog got spooked by fireworks, ran through his invisible fence and dashed into the woods on Saturday, July 5th. On Tuesday evening rescue workers navigated the rough terrain and hiked in from the nearby church making their way to where we’d be below that ravine to get in there while a representative from Pittsburgh Drone Pet Search & Rescue had a drone up and her best boy Hodor on standby to track.

“I checked it out and saw how thick it was and it was quite the steep ravine and knew he probably would have tumbled down that and possibly got hurt,” said one rescue worker in a social media post. “It was getting super thick near the bottom of that ravine and Carol and I had to climb over and under trees etc to access it.”

Winston was located very weak and dehydrated and had trouble moving and was too weak to walk.

A doggy backpack was used to haul Winston to safety.

“He’s a big boy. So it was like having a hundred pounds on your back trying to climb up steep hillsides and maneuver downed trees etc,” said the rescuer.

It was tough terrain but the workers made it all the while Amelia was waiting for the workers to come out of the thick woods to pick up video on the drone and trying to keep the owners busy so we could surprise them.

Once workers got out and on level grass Winston got a little pep in his step but would get weak every so many feet and needed to lay down according to the post.

Workers managed to find neighbors across the street outside and they rushed to bring a bowl of water for him.

“We have no doubt he was stuck there since Saturday so he was very dehydrated,” said a rescue worker on social media.

The neighbors were awesome and one gave Winston a ride in her Jeep so everyone could go down and surprise the owners

It was such a heartwarming reunion! Welcome home sweet Winston.
