It’s Greased Lightnin’ at the New Castle Playhouse as local talent presents “Grease,” July 11 – 20 on the main stage.
Directed by Amee Boughter, a stellar cast will bring your favorite characters to life on Thursdays, Fridays, & Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.
“Grease is more than just a musical—it’s a cultural phenomenon that has stood the test of time, and it’s an absolute blast to bring it to life,” says director and choreographer Amee Boughter. “It’s fun, it’s fast, and it’s filled with heart. At its core, Grease is about identity, friendship, and the growing pains of figuring out who you are—set to a rockin’ soundtrack that audiences of all ages know and love.”
It’s 1959, and Rydell High School’s senior class is in rare form. The too-cool-for-school “Burger Palace Boys” are stealing hub-caps and acting tough and their gum-snapping, chain-smoking “Pink Ladies” are looking hot in bobby sox and pedal pushers. The 1950s high school dream is about to explode in this rollicking musical that is both an homage to the idealism of the fifties and a satire of high schoolers’ age-old desire to be provocative and rebellious. At the heart of the story is the romance between hot-rodding gangster Danny Zuko and the sweet new girl in town, Sandy Dumbrowski. They had a secret romance in summer, but now back in the context of school, peer-pressure and cliques make their love a bit more complicated. Can Danny maintain his cool dude status and still get make demure Sandy his girl? The whole gang sings and dances around Danny and Sandy’s romance, through such hit songs as “Greased Lightnin’,”, “We Go Together,” and “Mooning,” recalling the music of Buddy Holly, Little Richard and Elvis Presley that became the soundtrack of a generation.
Amee brings a wealth of experience and passion to this production. She recently directed a musical at Laurel and serves as the choreographer for Riverside’s productions. She also has an extensive history with The New Castle Playhouse, where she has directed and choreographed several successful musicals. With a strong foundation in dance and musical theater, Amee is known for her dynamic staging, sharp choreography, and ability to create memorable moments that stay with audiences long after the curtain falls.
“I approach every show with fresh eyes, but one thing never changes—my belief in the power of storytelling through movement,” she says. “Dance isn’t just about steps. It’s about emotion, connection, and elevating the story in a way that words sometimes can’t.”
What makes this production especially meaningful to Amee is the cast she’s working with.
“This group of performers is extraordinary,” she says. “They are committed, talented, and genuinely supportive of one another. Their energy and enthusiasm have been infectious from day one. I’ve truly loved every moment of working with them, and I couldn’t be prouder of what they’ve accomplished together.”
As tech week ramps up and opening night approaches, Amee is confident audiences are in for something special.
“This cast, this crew, this show—it’s lightning in a bottle. We’re bringing the world of Rydell High to life in a way that’s bold, exciting, and full of heart. I can’t wait for everyone to see it.”
