Ellwood City scratched out a go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn a section victory over Mohawk Monday afternoon.
A walk and two Warriors errors help the Wolverines regain the lead after Mohawk had rallied with three runs in the top half of the frame to tie the game.
Ellwood City jumped out to the early lead in the second inning with a sacrifice fly by Gino Biondi and RBI groundout by Sam Landis put the Wolverines ahead 2-0.
Starter Aaron Lake went five strong innings, striking out nine batters and allowing only one run and four hits across his performance. Lake also collected two hits including a double offensively for Ellwood City. Mikael Cuevas also added two hits for the Wolverines.
With the victory Ellwood City earns at least a second place finish in the section with Riverside having a chance to earn the section title with a victory Tuesday afternoon in its regular season finale. The two split their two regular season games and could find each other for a rubber match in the WPIAL playoffs.
Ellwood City (12-4 Overall, 7-2 Section 3A-1) next travels to Mohawk Tuesday afternoon before wrapping up its regular season on the road May 1st at Western Beaver.
The Wolverines softball team easily dispatched Beaver Falls 17-2 in three innings on Monday.
The offensive pounded 20 hits and scored eleven runs in the first inning to make quick work of the Tigers.
Sara Schwarz (3-3, 2 runs) swatted three doubles and collected four RBIs to lead the offense. Amber McQuistion collected two doubles and Lena Lucarelli collected a triple as each finished a perfect 3-3 at the dish for Ellwood City.
All nine starters collected hits for the Wolverines. McQuistion struck out six batters and allowed two hits and one walk over her three innings in the pitching circle.
Ellwood City (9-5 Overall, 6-2 Section 3A-2) return home for three scheduled home games, first against Quaker Valley on Tuesday and then Hopewell on Wednesday. The Wolverines have clinched at least a top 3 finish in their section, earning an automatic bid to the WPIAL playoffs.
