A 37-year-old man from Ellwood City was exchanged gunfire before he was found dead in a wooded area after he exchanged gunfire with police on Tuesday, July 2nd near the Cranberry Highlands Golf Course in Butler County.
According to a PA State Police report, and at approximately 10:30 a.m., Cranberry Township Police were called for a suspicious male who had pulled his vehicle over near an entrance to the golf course. The male, later identified as Logan Cumberland, 37, of Ellwood City, left the immediate area prior to police arrival, was observed to be armed with a rifle.
Responding officers located the vehicle and observed numerous additional firearms inside the male’s vehicle. Multiple police departments, including a Pennsylvania State Police Aviation Unit, responded to the area and assisted in searching for the armed male.
Police issued a township-wide shelter-in-place order, asking all residents to stay inside and report any suspicious individuals. Cranberry Highlands Golf Course was evacuated, as were other public buildings and some businesses in the area.
At approximately 3:00 p.m., officers located the male in a wooded area near the golf course. Officers confronted the armed male and fatally shot him. No officers were injured during the incident.
It has also been reported that officers found Cumberland’s vehicle unoccupied with weapons inside along with notes indicating the man wanted to do harm to himself or others.
