ELLWOOD CITY SOFTBALL DEFEATS QUAKER VALLEY

The Lincoln High School softball team improved their record to 9-2 on the season as they defeated Quaker Valley 18-2 Wednesday afternoon in Sewickley.

The Wolverines posted 18 runs with only seven hits on the board.

Aliya Garroway powered the offense with a 3-RBI afternoon (2-3, 1 3B) for the Wolverines.  Maria Ioanilli tripled and scored three times while Katelyn Wehman walked twice and also scored three times for Ellwood City.

The Wolverines put the game away with a 8-run fourth inning to evoke the mercy rule.  Ioanilli knocked in two runs with a triple to the fence in right center field.

Julia Nardone picked up her ninth win of the season as she struck out 5 and walked just 1.

The Wolverines (9-2 overall, 4-2 section) will travel to Avonworth on Friday for some prime time action that includes a 7:00 p.m. start.

RIVERSIDE SOFTBALL SHUTS DOWN SHENANGO

Sam Rosenberger threw a three-hit shutout to lead Riverside past Shenango 2-0 on Wednesday.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Rosenberger struck out 11, while the Wildcats pitcher Mia Edwards also sat down 11 batters via the strike out while onlyl allowing two Panther hits.

Riverside struck twice in the bottom half of the third inning as it proved to be enough offense for the victory. Rosenberger (double) and Aliya Ottaviani collected the lone hits for Riverside.

The Lady Panthers (6-4 overall) will next host Mohawk on Friday afternoon with a 4:00 p.m. first pitch.

JOSEPH ROTH SHUTS DOWN BEAVER FALLS

Ellwood City defeated Beaver Falls 5-0 on Tuesday behind a strong pitching performace by Joseph Roth.

Roth started, lasting six and two-thirds innings, and allowed only three singles while striking out eight and walking one. Ryan Hampton threw one-third of an inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Ellwood City scored early in the first inning when Nick Magnifico singled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run, that proved to be all Roth needed on the mound.

The Wolverines saw the ball well at the plate, racking up 13 hits in the game. Roth, Bucky Biskup, Noah Magill, Sammy DiCaprio, and James Meehan each racked up multiple hits for Ellwood City. Meehan, DiCaprio, Magill, Biskup, and Roth each collected two hits to lead the Wolverines offense.

House took the loss for Beaver Falls. House allowed 13 hits and five runs over seven innings, striking out two. Brickner led Beaver Falls with two hits in three at bats.

The Ellwood City baseball team (7-9 overall) will host West Allegheny on Thursday afternoon and then host Mohawk on Monday afternoon, both games scheduled for Sanders Field in Ewing Park.

RIVERSIDE BASEBALL DEFEATED BY SOUTH SIDE 7-4

Riverside watched the game slip away early and couldn’t recover in a 7-4 loss to South Side on Tuesday.

The Panthers lost despite out-hitting South Side ten to eight.

After scoring the game’s first run in the top of the first inning, Riverside saw South Side counter with single runs in each of its first three innings and four-run fourth inning put the game out of reach for the visiting Panthers. A two run Riverside rally in the seventh inning was not enough for the Panthers.

Mitchell Garvin, Evan Burry, and Aaron Falk (1 3B) each collected multiple hits for Riverside. Garvin led the Panthers with three hits in four at bats.  Shawn Kristophel toed the rubber for Riverside and surrendered three runs on four hits over three innings, striking out one. Madden Boehm threw three innings in relief striking out six batters.

Luke McCoy earned the victory for South Side as he went five innings, allowing two runs on eight hits, striking out five and walking one.

Riverside (8-5 overall) next welcomes Hopewell Area on Friday before hosting Laurel on Monday afternoon. Both games are scheduled for 4:00 p.m. starts.
