Typically, a summer season for baseball and softball would be filled with play-off games and tournaments, but since the pandemic, local youth baseball and softball organizations have decided to use whatever they can of the summer to give the local youth a chance to play this year.
Local leagues like the Ellwood City Girls Softball League, will only have 5 teams for their 13-18 age group and 3 teams for their 9-12 age group. They began practicing at the begining of June and will start having games June 29th. The teams have been practicing at the fields in Ellport. They did, however, have to cancel their 8 and under spring season, but secretary Kathy Hooker said they will have the opportunity to play again in the fall.
When asked how she feels about still having the opportunity to play softball this season, Morgan Hooker replied, “I’m glad we can still have a season, even if it’s not what we expected.”
Local baseball leagues are already well under way with the start of their summer season. Riverside Baseball Federation, or RBF, began holding games on June 15 and the Ellwood City Youth Baseball league held Pony and Colt league games starting on June 15. Their younger leagues began on June 22.
The Riverside Girls Athletic Association will be holding their slow pitch season beginning mid-June while their Fast pitch games will not start until August 3rd and run through September.
