New Mural Underway on the Fifth Street Underpass

Ellwood City Council gave permission last week to let the nonprofit Kitchen Cabinet group commission a local artist to paint murals on the north and south side facades of the Fifth Street underpass.

Woodrow Cowher of Ellwood City, who recently completed the mural at Sweet Caroline’s ice cream shop on Lawrence Ave, began work this week. Officials hope to have the project completed by the end of summer.

The project, which is funded through the Hoyt Foundation and also supported by Ellwood Community Enrichment, is expected to take about three weeks to complete. Cowher is adapting local community images approved by council and the Hoyt Foundation and Ellwood Community Enrichment. Under an agreement with the borough, the Kitchen Cabinet will be responsible for maintenance and upkeep on the murals for three years.

There will be four murals on each side of the road. The side heading toward Lawrence Avenue will play up the modern Ellwood City, with images of coffee drinkers, golfers, Lady Liberty and the farmers market. The side heading toward Line Avenue will depict historical images such as Rockpoint Park, Union Station and Park Hotel, steelworkers at a forge and views from the Harmony trolley.
