Janey Swanik, 101, formerly of Wampum passed away Sunday, May 13, 2018 at Wyngate Senior Living in Weirton, West Virginia.
She was born on June 15, 1916 in Clarksburg, WV. She was one of twelve children born to her Spanish immigrant parents, Jesus and Dolores Artinez Gonzalez The family moved to Langeloth, PA when Janey was a child and she lived there until her marriage to Michael Swanik on July 29, 1937. She was a 1935 graduate of Burgettstown High School. Janey and Mike moved to Wampum in 1946 when Michael purchased the Sno-Top Mushroom Farm.
Janey was a member of the Clinton United Methodist Church and the Ellwood City Order of the Eastern Star. When not working at home, she helped to run the mushroom business, even giving speeches from time to time on how to grow mushrooms. She enjoyed gardening, making wool heirloom hooked rugs and quilting. She made more than 200 quilts during her life. She especially enjoyed cooking for large groups of people and events. With her husband, Michael, Janey traveled often around the world and they were very involved in polka dancing, particularly at the SNPJ Club in Enon Valley.
Janey is survived by two children, Michael (Susan) Swanik Jr. and Anita LaLumere. She also has five grandchildren, James (Claudia) Swanik, Charles “Buz” (Kathy) Swanik, Jill LaLumere, Ellen LaLumere and Jessica (Kenneth) Romano. As well as six great grandchildren; Matthew Cossio, Maria Swanik, Brenden Swanik, Alexandra Swanik, Gabrielle Swanik, and Natalie Romanl; and a sister, Josephine Jacobs.
Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, May 19 from 11 am until the time of the funeral service at 1 pm at the Marshall Funeral Home 341 Main Street Wampum. Interment will follow in Clinton Cemetery.
