Ellwood City watched the game slip away early and couldn’t recover in a 14-4 loss to Armstrong on Saturday.
Armstrong scored on a ground out by Caleb Harriger, a walk by Josh Hepler, an error, and a stolen base by Paul Cypher in a 5-run first inning.
The Wolverines struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Armstrong, giving up 14 runs on 11 hits, with the defense surrendering four errors.
Ellwood City scored four runs in the fifth inning. Sammy DeCaprio, Ryan Hampton, and Ryan Gibbons each had RBIs in the big inning.
Harriger took the win for Armstrong. He surrendered zero runs on two hits over two and two-thirds innings, striking out two. Jordan Dillard and Brady Wolfe entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.
Noah Rinker took the loss for Ellwood City Wolverines. He allowed two hits and five runs over one inning. DeCaprio, Hampton, Jake Matheny, Gibbons, and Ricky Pitrelli each managed one hit to lead Ellwood City Wolverines.
Reise Matson and Dawson Porter all managed multiple hits for Armstrong. Matson led Armstrong with four hits in four at bats. Armstrong didn’t commit a single error in the field. Porter had five chances in the field, the most on the team.
The Wolverines (0-2 overall) next host New Brighton, Tuesday afternoon at 4:30pm at Sanders Field in Ewing Park.
