ELLWOOD CITY – In response to parking tickets that were issued at a legislative press conference on Thursday, May 11, state Rep. Aaron Bernstine (R-New Beaver) and Ellwood City Mayor Anthony Court have jointly agreed to send documentation of the event to the Lawrence County District Attorney office, Bernstine announced today.
Bernstine held a press conference in front of a private residence on Wampum Avenue to announce his legislation to better regulate municipal electric costs. Many attendees of the event, including Bernstine himself, received parking tickets from the Ellwood City Police Department.
“Because I firmly believe that the tickets were given for no justifiable reason, I reached out to Mayor Court and Ellwood City Police Lieutenant David Kingston to discuss the matter. Lt. Kingston stated that he did not believe that the act was political targeting,” Bernstine said. “The three of us collectively agreed to send this information to Lawrence County District Attorney Josh Lamancusa. The district attorney has agreed to look at this issue.”
Bernstine also reported that Mayor Court announced that all parking tickets associated with this event will be retracted while the district attorney evaluates the situation.
Bernstine noted that he’s already hand-delivered his check to Lt. Kingston to pay for the ticket that he received, because he doesn’t want it to appear that he’s simply trying to get out of paying for a ticket. Should his ticket be revoked, he asked for the Ellwood City Police Department to use his $25 as a donation for a future community outreach project.
“I’m grateful that District Attorney Lamancusa is willing to accept the information and look into what happened. While the district attorney reviews this issue, I will be working on issues to improve the 10th District,” Bernstine said. “Both Mayor Court and I want the facts to be made known to District Attorney Lamancusa, a law enforcement official who consistently operates his office with judicious integrity.”
The lawmaker stressed that the investigation will certainly not be a political issue as District Attorney Lamancusa is a Democrat and Bernstine is a Republican.
