The Ellwood City boys basketball team split their two games in the Mercer Christmas Tournament this week.
On Monday, the Wolverines easily dispatched of Clarion-Limestone 77-36 behind a 21-point scoring performance by Kaleb Servick. Servick added seven assists and four steals in the victory. Aaron Lake posted a double-double finishing with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and added seven assists for Ellwood City. Eight players scored in the victory as Ellwood City held a comfortable 51-16 halftime lead.
The Wolverines were defeated 68-60 by Lakeview in the championship game on Tuesday. Mikael Cuevas scored eight of his team-high 18 points int he first quarter as Ellwood City held a slim 18-16 advantage. Lakeview responded and held a 30-27 halftime advantage before the Sailor’s Lucas Fagley poured in 16 of his game-high 29 points to help Lakeview secure the victory.
Kaleb Servick (15 points, nine assists) and Tyler Smiley (12 points, 3 3PM) joined Cuevas in double figures for the Wolverines. Ellwood City was called for four technical fouls in the game.
Ellwood City now holds a 6-5 (2-2 Class 3A-1) record and will return to section play on Monday, January 5th when they host Sto-Rox at 7:30 p.m. The Lady Wolverines will play at 6:00 p.m. ahead of the boys varsity contest.
McCartney Plassmeyer poured in a game-high 29 points to help the Riverside boys basketball team rout Burgettstown 79-43 on Saturday. Plassmeyer knocked home four 3-pointers and raced out with 12 first quarter points as the Panthers led comfortable 20-10 after the opening frame and 39-20 at halftime. Cole Becker chipped in 12 points and Tony Chill finished with two 3-pointers and nine points for the Panthers in the victory.
Riverside was defeated 65-64 by Geibel on Friday in the opening game of its two game tournament and now holds a record of 6-3, 2-2 Section 3A-1.
Fellow Panther basketball standout Emma Meyer also had an impressive scoring performance on Tuesday, finishing with a game-high 25 points (3 3PM, eight steals) as Riverside edged Laurel 56-49. The Lady Panthers led comfortably 32-11 at halftime before the Spartans stormed back in the second half. Addison Drake joined Meyer in double figures with 11 points and added nine rebounds for the victors.
