The runners of Ellwood City boys and girls cross country teams began their regular season with a matchup at Laurel on Tuesday afternoon versus the host Spartans, Union, and Beaver County Christian.
The Wolverine Varsity Boys took control of their section with a victory Tuesday and now stand at 3-0 on the season. The boys managed to defeat the field at Laurel, placing their top 5 runners in the top 6 of the competition. Senior Luke Bleakney won his first Varsity race of his career covering the course in 16:57.

Varsity Girls start off the season 2-1 in section meets as they defeat the Scotties and BCC but fall to Laurel 27-31. Sophomore Peyton Cooper picks up her first Varsity win of her career finishing with a time 24:28 as Freshman teammate Sophia D’Addio grabbed second place in 25:13.

The teams will be back in section-action at Brush Creek Park on Tuesday, September 16th at 3:45pm to take on Freedom, Beaver Falls, and Shenango.
The Wolverines took on a stacked field in a preview of both the WPIAL course and the best “AA” competition at the Red, White, & Blue Invitational at White Oak on Saturday. The boys placed 6th in WPIAL and 9th place overall. Luke Bleakney shined with a team-best time of 16:15, good for 7th overall.
