Riverside Cruises Past Burrell, Ellwood City Knocked Off By Mohawk

There will be no Riv-Ell WPIAL Championship game in 2025 as Ellwood City was knocked off by #11 seed Mohawk in the WPIAL Class 3A Quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Top-seeded Riverside cruised to an 11-0 victory over Burrell advancing to the semifinals to face South Park on Wednesday at Plum High School at 4:00 p.m.

RIVERSIDE 11 BURRELL 0

Hunter Garvin drove in five runs on two hits to lead Riverside past the Burrell Bucs 11-0 on Tuesday. Hunter Garvin hit a grand slam in the fifth inning, scoring four runs, and doubled in the fourth inning, scoring one.

Zack Hare struck out 12 batters on the day. The righty also allowed zero hits and zero runs over five innings while walking two.

Hare also knocked in the game’s first run in the first inning with a RBI double. Hare also walked twice.

Riverside (15-2 Overall) added six more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on four hits. Drake Fox hit a solo home run to left field, John Bowser singled, scoring one run, and Garvin hit his grand slam to right field.

Garvin, Dylan Meyer, and John Bowser each collected two hits for Riverside. The team had patience at the plate, collecting seven walks for the game. Riverside stole four bases in the game.

MOHAWK 3 ELLWOOD CITY 1

Briar Crawford and Bobby Fadden combined to stymie the Wolverines bats on Tuesday as the duo allowed only two hits across seven innings to help #11 seed Mohawk secure a 3-1 victory in the WPIAL quarterfinals.

Ellwood City was the first to get on the board in the third when Nate Kennedy hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run.

A single by Kamren O’Lare gave the Mohawk Warriors the lead, 2-1, in the top of the fourth.

Vinny Pezzuolo hit a solo home run to left field in the top of the sixth for the Mohawk.

Crawford earned the win for Mohawk, surrendering just one hit and zero runs over four innings, striking out four and walking none. Nate Kennedy took the loss for Ellwood City. Kennedy went seven innings, surrendering three runs on five hits, striking out five and walking one.

Maykel Cuevas and Cameron Mills each collected a hit for Ellwood City.

Mohawk advances to play #7 Quaker Valley on Wednesday at Seneca Valley HS with a chance to face section foe Riverside in the WPIAL Championship game.  Quaker Valley upended defending Class 3A champion Avonworth 1-0 on Tuesday.
