Wolverines Rally From Deep, Knock Off South Park In WPIAL Opening Round

The Wolverines used the deep ball to rally from a 10-point halftime deficit Tuesday night and defeated South Park 55-51 in WPIAL 3A Boys Basketball opening round action.

After trailing 34-24 at halftime, Ellwood City ripped off four 3-pointers and 20 points in the 3rd quarter. Chuckie Schweinsberg nailed three of his four 3-pointers in the quarter.

Schweinsberg finished with a team-high 16 points (5-10 shooting, four 3-pointers, and two rebounds) as Ellwood City finished with ten 3-pointers as a team in the victory.

Maykel Cuevas scored all eight of the Wolverines second quarter points and knocked home three 3-pointers en route to his 11-point performance.

Kaleb Servick and Aaron Lake each finished with eight points for Ellwood City. Servick dished out nine assists and Lake hauled in seven rebounds. Jackson Kerr collected two first quarter 3-pointers.

Cooper Hochendoner finished with a game-high 18 points in defeat for South Park (15-8 Overall).

Ellwood City (14-9 Overall) advances to play #2 South Allegheny on Friday at a place and time TBA. South Allegheny (21-3 Overall) defeated Charleroi 61-32 behind its 1,000 point scorers Cam Epps and Drew Cook who combined for 42 points for the Gladiators.

The Ellwood City girls basketball team and the Riverside girls basketball teams both take the court Wednesday night in their respective WPIAL Class 3A quarterfinal games.  Ellwood City will face #4 Keystone Oaks while Riverside will play top seeded Shady Side Academy.
