During March 2024, Jehovah’s Witnesses will be launching a special campaign to invite fellow residents of New Castle and Ellwood City to two special events. On Sunday, March 24th, millions of Jehovah’s Witnesses around the world will gather to commemorate the death of Jesus Christ. The annual observance of the Lord’s Evening Meal will feature a talk highlighting the significance of Jesus’ death and what it means for all of mankind. Joann VanGorder, 81

Joann VanGorder, 81, of Boyers, formerly of Ellwood City, passed away peacefully at Allegheny General Hospital on Wednesday, March 13, 2024. Born in Ellwood City on November 24, 1942, Joann was the daughter of the late Joseph and Ida Barnhouse Kelly.  She married Kenneth VanGorder on October 18, 1961 and they were married three days short of fifty-eight years when he preceded her in death in 2019.  A 1960 graduate of Lincoln High School, Joann was a very active octogenarian.  She still enjoyed riding her side by side, sitting on her porch enjoying all the wildlife that would happen by…

ECASD Moving Forward with Testing at Proposed Site of Girls Softball Field

Ellwood City Area School District Superintendent Dr. Wesley Shipley announced during Monday’s board of director’s committee meeting that although the district is moving forward with tests and studies on the proposed area for the new girls softball field at the old Ewing Park School site, they are still far away from the building permits and zoning process. Shipley said workers have been at the site to do topographical studies and to take core samples and water perk tests.
