Joan Adele Birkins (nee Nelson), 93, of Ellwood City, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 31st 2024 at her home surrounded by her family. Joan was the daughter of the late Carl and Ruth (Hansel) Nelson. Joan was born in New York, NY on August 7th, 1930.  She married the love of her life, the late Ransom Parker Birkins, on September 4th, 1948. A stay-at-home mother until all her children were in school, Joan found a fulfilling career as the Director of Administration for Home Equity in Wilton, Connecticut. Ellwood City School District Offices and LHS Offices Closed August 5-9

In a temporary closure to help address plumbing upgrades, the Ellwood City Area School District Offices and Lincoln High School Offices will be closed for a week beginning Monday, August 5th. “We are closing because water has to be turned off the entire week for plumbing upgrades,” said Wes Shipley, Superintendent, in an email. Mrs. Mary Scialdone, 92, of Ellwood City passed away on Monday, July 29th,2024 at her residence. Mrs. Scialdone was born in Forestville, PA on August 4th, 1931 to the late Philip and Frances F. (Ferrell) Labor. She had worked at the Ellwood City Knitting Mill and later as a crossing guard for the Ellwood City Area School District for 22 years. Catherine “Kay” Thompson, 101, of Ellwood City passed away Monday, July 29, 2024 at Northview Estates. Born August 19, 1922 in Ellwood City, she was the daughter of the late James Franklin and Esther Cora Shaffer Marshall. She was married to Robert G. Thompson for 59 years. Catherine graduated from Lincoln High School in 1940. Throughout her life she was a member of the Calvin Presbyterian Church, Camp Run Presbyterian Church, and the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Scottsboro, Alabama. Mrs. Ann Walker, 80, of Freedom passed away on Monday, July 29th, 2024 at the UPMC Passavant Hospital in McCandless Township. Ellwood City Falls Short In 73rd Little League Tournament; Zito Earns Homerun Derby Crown

After collecting an opening round win on Tuesday in the 73rd Annual Little League Tournament, Ellwood City squad could not advance any further, falling twice on Saturday, first to Laurel and again to Neshannock, each by a 5-2 count that eliminated the tournament host. Neshannock earned the tournament championship with two victories over Laurel on Sunday. Ellwood City’s Joey Zito won the the 23rd Ellwood City Little League Tournament Home Run Derby at Freidhoff Field. Zito launched eight home runs to defeat 29 other contestants from the tournament. Franklin Township To Host 11th Annual National Night Out Event

Come on out and mingle with fellow community members! Franklin Township will be holding their 10th Annual National Night Out Event on Tuesday, August 6th, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Franklin Plaza in Ellwood City. There will be free activities for children, fire safety, CPR training, prize giveaways, and food vendors. The annual event will host approximately 40 vendors for the event. “Though she be but little, she is fierce.” On July 18, 2024, Winifred Yvonne Goatley Daniel departed this life at the home of her daughter after a short illness. Born in Chewton, PA August 20, 1937 to William and Imogene Goatley, she graduated from Wampum High School (’55) and Central State University (BA ’60). She went on to teach grades 1-8 for over forty years in the CMSD, Maple Heights City Schools and Warren City Schools districts.
