HARRISBURG – Reps. Aaron Bernstine (R-Butler/Lawrence) and Marla Brown (R-Lawrence) are pleased to announce two recipients in Lawrence County have been awarded Farm-to-School Grants. These grants, part of a statewide initiative by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, will support projects aimed at improving access to healthy, local food and providing hands-on agricultural learning experiences for children from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.
“I’m thrilled to see such vital funding come to our community,” said Brown. “These grants not only help connect children to local, healthy food but also enhance their agricultural education through hands-on experiences. This is a wonderful opportunity to enrich the lives of our students and strengthen our local food systems.”
“These projects demonstrate the importance of connecting students with Pennsylvania’s rich agricultural heritage and nutritious, locally grown food. I look forward to seeing the positive impact these grants will have on our community,” said Bernstine.
Awardees in Lawrence County include:
- Laurel School District – $7,500. The district will use these funds to purchase a freezer for the storage of locally sourced fresh beef through the Pennsylvania Beef for PA Schools program, ensuring students have access to high-quality, local meat.
- Lawrence County Social Services – $15,000. The Healthy Start Ag and Nutrition Center will apply the grant to maintain its grow zones and cover costs for early learning field trips to the center. Students will explore the garden, greenhouse, and hydroponic lab while participating in the Pennsylvania Harvest of the Month activities. Additionally, funds will support agriculture and nutrition programming at family engagement events.
The PA Farm-to-School Grant Program awarded a total of $462,607 to 45 schools, school districts and childhood education centers across 26 counties.
