Again?
Ames Department Stores, once the fourth largest discount retailer in the country that went out of business over two decades ago, has once again announced they are returning – this time in 2026 – according to information posted on its website.
In similar fashion to a December 2022 announcement that went flat, Ames has provided some limited information on its website – www.amesstores.com – that June 2026 is the new scheduled opening date for brick & mortar Ames locations. There are currently 35 locations planned to open across the United States by late 2027, with plans to add more locations during 2028.
The franchise had a storefront in the Franklin Plaza in Ellwood City.
The store offered clothing, footwear, bedding, furniture, jewelry, beauty products, toys, electronics and housewares.
However, in 2002, and after an initial round of closures, Ames began a final liquidation of its remaining stores, shuttering its remaining 327 stores, including the Ellwood City location, resulting in 49 local employees losing their jobs.
According to the functioning, but rather limited Ames Department Stores website, seven Distribution Centers are to open near Ames locations to handle deliveries, Ames Cafe will be available at all 35 locations, and a new Ames website will allow Online Ordering & Home Delivery
Click & Collect will be available from participating locations and plans for a Pharmacy have been submitted at participating locations.
According to reputable news outlets, organizers of the alleged store comeback have been difficult to reach and verification tough to come by.
