The Riverside Swimming team competed in the PIAA State Championships this past weekend at Bucknell University.
“My assistant, David Peffer, and I are beyond proud of how our boys did this past weekend,” said head coach Alaina Marshall. “The bar at the competition level continues to be raised every year and our small team remains competitive amongst the best of them.”
On Saturday, senior Joseph Roth broke his own 100-Yard Backstroke state record at finals with a time of 48.34, but was just out-touched at the finish by Luke Lamb of North Catholic. Roth finished 2nd Place overall as Lamb finished at 48.08.

“Roth’s performance was nothing short of incredible,” added Marshall. “He for sure left me in awe after his last performance this weekend. Every fine detail we have been working on all season came finally together for him where he was able to see best times he has been striving for in his 100 Freestyle relay split and his 100 Backstroke. He may not have finished in the place he had wanted overall, but he was smiling from ear to ear celebrating his achievements with his team.”
Lamb’s victory in the 100-Yard Backstroke prevented Roth from taking home his third straight championship.
On Friday, Roth finished 3rd overall (21.07) in the 50-Yard Freestyle. Fellow senior Ryan Turner also competed in the 50-Yard Freestyle where he finished 18th Overall.
The 200-Yard Freestyle Relay, comprised of Turner, Roth, Gavin Frederick, and Michael Styn, also competed where they tied for 5th overall (1:28.09) with Clearfield. Indiana Area took 1st Overall with a time of 1:25.38.
On Saturday, Ryan Turner advanced to the consolation final in the 100-Yard Freestyle where he finished 15th overall.
The 400-Freestyle relay, comprised again of Ryan Turner, Gavin Frederick, Michael Styn, and Joseph Roth, competed together one last time finishing 8th place overall.
The team will look to next year and will have to replace graduating seniors Roth and Turner in their relay line-up.
“Roth and Turner have been two very strong leaders for this team and their presence on deck will be strongly missed next season,” says Marshall.
“Michael Styn and Gavin Frederick will return as seniors next year where they intend to carry on the same level of success as leaders Roth and Turner have paved the way for.”
The Panthers Swimming team finished 9th Overall in the team ranking with 84 points. Indiana Area finished 1st Overall in the team rankings with 184 points.
