ELLWOOD, in partnership with Lawrence County School-to-Work, hosted their 18th annual High School Engineering Day on Thursday, March 7, at ELLWOOD City Forge. More than 20 students from area high schools visited the ELLWOOD location to learn about engineering careers and more.
The event is designed to be both fun and educational as the students had the opportunity to witness ELLWOOD City Forge’s state-of-the-art forging process as well as material testing and machining. The students were selected by their respective schools to attend the event because they have an interest in engineering or a related career field.
Participating juniors and seniors from high schools in Ellwood City, New Castle, Riverside, Neshannock, Laurel, Mohawk, Union, Shenango, Wilmington, and the Lawrence County Career and Technical Center started their day with a 10 a.m. welcome from ELLWOOD executives.
Following the welcome, the itinerary for the day included a tour of ELLWOOD City Forge, lunch, and a panel discussion where students had the chance to hear from company experts and take part in a Q&A.
“This year we structured the day a little differently where in place of the student presentations, we put an emphasis on our team taking more time in the afternoon to open up a discussion about the industry,” said Marie Russo Director of Human Resources with ELLWOOD. “In addition to the opportunity to engage with our professionals, the students were able to see our forge shop in action and gain an understanding of some of the complex challenges that our engineers face every day as we work to meet our customer’s needs.”
High School Engineering Day was developed by ELLWOOD as an event to host students from around the county to give them a better understanding of the many career paths that exist within the company, their community, and the manufacturing industry.
“For area students to hear from experts and gain an understanding of the type of work being done at companies like ELLWOOD is incredibly beneficial for them as they plan their career paths,” said Lynda Jaworski-Rapone School-to-Work Executive Director. “Showcasing to our youth the many career opportunities within our own community is vitally important to the success of our region. Events like Engineering Day allows them to see the real important work being done in their own back yard.”
