A strong second quarter propelled the Wolverines to a 53-36 victory over Washington Monday night in its WPIAL 3A opening round playoff contest.
After a fast paced first frame that saw Ellwood City lead 17-11, the Wolverines held the Prexies scoreless for more than half the second quarter to separate and extend its lead to 29-15 at intermission.
Two third quarter 3-pointers by Nate Williams and 10 second half points by Joseph Roth helped the Wolverines secure the victory.
The Wolverines, who never trailed in the game, connected on five 3-pointers in the contest. Roth scored 10 of his game-high 18 points (10 rebounds, five assists) in the second half.
Ellwood City saw all five starters scored in the contest. Williams joined Roth in double figures with 13 points for the Wolverines. Chris Smiley chipped in with nine points (two 3 pointers) and senior Colten Crizer finished with seven points and six assists. Aaron Lake (six points, seven rebounds) rounded out the scoring for Ellwood City.
Deondre Daugherty, a 6-6, 255-pound senior forward, led the Prexies with 12 points in defeat.
The #9 seeded Wolverines (16-7 Overall) next face top seed and defending WPIAL Class 3A Champion Deer Lakes on Thursday, February 22nd at a neutral site and with a time TBA. The Lancers (18-4 Overall) cruised to its opening round victory Monday, defeating Sto-Rox 62-32. The Wolverines will look to exact revenge as Deer Lakes downed Ellwood City last year in the opening round of the 2023 WPIAL Playoffs.
Joseph Roth will enter the game 15 points shy of 2,000 career points — and can become the first Lawrence County player in nearly two decades to reach the mark. The last was Shenango’s Steve McNees in 2005-06.
