Mrs. Frieda Theresia Pitelka, 93, of Ellwood City passed away the afternoon of January 14, 2024 at Quality Life Service of New Castle.
Born in Zemun, Yugoslavia on August 23, 1930, Frieda was the daughter of the late Josef and Jovanika (Dragutinovic) Viola.
Frieda married her beloved husband Frank Pitelka in Austria on September 11, 1948. They had made their home in Ellwood City since 1952. After sixty-nine years of marriage Frank preceded her in death in 2018.
Frieda was a homemaker and well known for her baking skills. Her Christmas cookies, German Tortes and Strudel were enjoyed by many. Known as “Oma” to family and friends, one of her greatest joys was baking time with her great-granddaughter Tessa. Frieda also enjoyed spending time with her husband Frank on their boat at Lake Arthur. Frieda also enjoyed preparing fish dinners, doing needlepoint crafts and gardening.
Frieda was a member of the Divine Grace Parish/Holy Redeemer Church, the Saxon Ladies Auxiliary, where she spent time catering meals for local clubs. She had also served, along with her husband on the After Prom Committee in the early 70’s.
The first of five generations, Frieda is survived by her daughter, Erika Russell of Slippery Rock, her son, Frank M. Pitelka (Shari Flamino) of Ellwood City, six grandchildren, William Russell, Susan Daugherty (Richard), Ann Russell, Peggy White (Ben), Michael Russell (Rebecca) and Jennifer Shazer (Justin), her brother, Ivan Viola and niece Vesna Carlson (Alan), ten great grandchildren and eleven great-great grandchildren.
In Addition to her parents and husband, Frieda was preceded in death by her brother, Stevo Viola, sister-in-law, Dusica “Dewey” Viola and daughter-in-law, Cindy Ferruchie Pitelka.
The family would like to Thank the staff at Quality Life Service of New Castle for the compassion and care given to Frieda.
Honoring her wishes there will be no viewing hours.
