The Riverside boys team had their first official section meet of the season against Blackhawk last Thursday and, as expected, tensions were high and the cheering was loud.
Although an individual team record was set and a relay team collected a major victory, the Riverside boys narrowly fell to Blackhawk 88-87.
Joseph Roth broke the team record for the 200 Individual Medley with a 1:58.62.
Riverside Boys 200 Freestyle Relay earned a major victory – not only winning the relay event, but the boys also broke the pool record for Blackhawk High School for the event that was established in 2011. Gavin Frederick, Michael Styn, Joseph Roth, and Ryan Turner combined swam a time of 1:30.92.
“The boys swam an all around fantastic meet,” said head coach Alaina Marshall. “The boys and I didn’t even realize they had broken the pool record until after the meet was over.”
Roth, Turner, Styn, and Frederick all qualified for the WPIAL Championship within their respective individual events according to their coach.
Sophomore Nathan Goff also qualified for the WPIAL championship for the first time ever in the 100 backstroke. He did not qualify as a freshman for the championship last season.
“Our relays are performing further ahead now compared to where we were this time last year,” adds Marshall. “We are hopeful to have major success come championship season.”
Add to the mix Peter Ruggeri who continues to shine this season according to Marshall.
“He played a major role in our team’s success last night both individually and among relays. He is currently just missing the qualifying times needed for the WPIAL championship in both the 50 and the 100 by less than a half second each.”
Riverside will have their next section meet next Wednesday at home against Beaver Falls. The next Championship meet will be the MAC Championship at Moon High School on February 17.
