John D. Bender, 83, of East Palestine, OH peacefully passed away at home on Sunday, September 17, 2023, following a brief illness. John was born in Ellwood City, PA on August 17, 1940, to the late John and Eleanor Bender.
Following his graduation from Lincoln High School in 1958, John served in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Tilden in New York, as a Nike missile tracking operator from 1958 to 1961. Subsequently, he embarked on a career as a crane operator, dedicating 26 years of his life to the B&W Steel Mill and spent another 13 years at Koppel Steel before retiring in 2002. Additionally, he contributed his skills to the Kenmar Manufacturing Company.
John is survived by his wife Joyce M. Simoff, of 57 years; his three children, John Bender and partner Crystal Lake of Front Royal, VA, Julie Limpach (Matt) of Elyria, OH and Michael Bender of East Palestine, OH and his fiancée Kristin Falkner of Wexford, PA; three grandchildren, Evan Bender of Winchester, VA, Olivia Bender of East Palestine, OH and Matthew Limpach of Elyria, OH; and a great granddaughter London Bender of Winchester, VA. John is also survived by his sister Barbara Heimann of Texas, brother-in-law Michael Simoff and partner Bobbie McGowan of New Castle, PA, sister-in-law Ellen Simoff of Harmony, PA and special friends Richard and Dorothy Tilbrook of East Palestine, OH. Additionally, he leaves behind several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is proceeded in death by his daughter-in-law Brandi Bender, brother-in-law Ted Simoff and sister-in-law Patricia Connolly.
John was widely regarded as a good guy, esteemed not only as a great father but also as an exceptional grandpap. He was a man who thought of others before himself. With a passion for literature, he found solace in the tranquility of the woods, indulging in hunting and fishing. His enthusiasm extended to supporting the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Penguins, avidly following their games. Above all, he took immense pride in the achievements of his beloved grandchildren, cherishing their every accomplishment.
