John August Bennett, 95, of Wayne Township passed peacefully on Sunday, July 16, 2023 at UPMC McCandless surrounded by his family. John was born in Darlington on January 1, 1928. He was the son of the late Elizabeth Binder and William J. Bennett. He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Dora (Duff) Bennett who passed away June 8, 2023.
John proudly served in the US Army. He worked at Babcock and Wilcox in Fittings and Forging until his retirement. In his retirement, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, working in his garage, shooting pool, gardening, going to the Rogers sale and auctions. Most of all, John loved spending time laughing, sharing stories of the past, and making memories with his family. John was a stranger to none and a friend to all, he will be greatly missed and always be remembered.
He was a beloved father of three daughters, LuAnn (Rick) Lutz of Ellwood City, Debbie (Bob) Burry of New Castle, Barb (Curt) Peffer of Fombell; and one son John (Rhonda) Bennett of Beaver Falls.
He was the “Best Poppy” to six grandchildren: Lisa (Greg) Barchetti, Lori (Adam) Newman, Andy (Heidi) Burry, Amy Zajac, Chelsey (Dan) Yaromey, Courtney (Josh) Bennett. And his pride and joy 8 great-grandchildren: Paige, Sydney, Brady, Jonathan, Justin, Chassey, Ryan, and River.
He is survived by his brother Fred Bennett of Fombell and preceded in death by his brother William Bennett and sister Elizabeth “Sis” O’Brien.
Family and friends will be received on July 19, 2023 from 3-7 pm. at Marshalls Funeral Home, 200 Fountain Avenue Ellwood City. The funeral service will follow at 7 pm. with Pastor Billy Woodman officiating the service. Military rites will be offered by the Veteran’s Honor Guard.
