Linda Menold Bates, 83, of New Castle passed away Saturday, June 3, 2023, at Quality Life Services. She was born January 28, 1940, to Howard and Louetta (Nicholson) Menold, in Ellwood City.
She was survived by her husband of 13 years, Donald “Don” Bates of New Castle.
Linda grew up in Ewing Park and was a 1958 graduate of Lincoln High School. She then went on to nursing school and became an Operating Room Technician. Her career started in Pittsburgh, where she had worked on one of the first Kidney Transplant teams in the US. In 1965, Linda moved to Santa Monica, California and became the private Scrub Nurse for the Chief of Plastic Surgery, at Cedars-Sinai Hospital, in Los Angeles. While there, she became well known for her suturing skills and was soon asked to be the private scrub nurse for Dr. Franklin L. Ashley, who during that time period, was the renowned plastic surgeon of the “stars” of Beverly Hills & Santa Barbara. She worked with him and performed all of his closures. During this time, she was also hired as the operating room consultant for the TV show Marcus Welby, MD.
Linda was an avid golfer and during her time off she played most every course up and down the Pacific coast including Pebble Beach & Torrey Pines. She met her husband in,1990, while golfing and they later moved to Seattle, WA, his hometown. While there, she became an ESL teacher for the local grade school. Since she never had children of her own, Linda loved working with the children from different countries, who were eager to learn English. Her husband died of cancer in 2008 and in 2011 she married an old Lincoln High School classmate, Don Bates, whom had previously lost his wife to cancer.
Linda was preceded in death by her parents and her only sibling younger brother “Sandy”.
There will be no viewing per her request.
She will be interred at Slippery Rock Presbyterian Cemetery in Ellwood City, along with her family.
