Several Local Athletes Shine In WPIAL Championships, Qualify For PIAA

Riverside standout Joe Reed headlined a group of Panthers who qualified for the PIAA Track and Field Championships with their individual performances Wednesday at the 2023 WPIAL Individual Championships at Slippery Rock University.

Reed placed 1st overall in the javelin with a toss of 180’8″, a mark over 16-foot longer than the second place finisher.

Ellwood City’s Delaney Sturgeon, who placed 2nd overall in the girls high jump with a mark of 5’2″, was among the two individual athletes and relay team from Ellwood City to qualify for states.

The following athletes won medals and advanced to the PIAA Championships over Memorial Day weekend.

  • 1st place: Javelin- Joe Reed, Riverside, 180’8″ (WPIAL Champion)
  • 2nd place: High Jump – Delaney Sturgeon, Ellwood City, 5’2″
  • 3rd place: 3200M Run – Lexi Fluharty, Riverside, 11:35.66
  • 4th place: 1600M Run – Lexi Fluharty 5:16.84 (set new school record)
  • 4th place: Pole Vault – Reece Sullivan, Riverside, 12’6″
  • 4th place: 4x800m Relay – Ellwood City (Colten Crizer, Bradley Custer, Drew Steffler, Nick Wise) 8:27.86
  • 5th place: 110m Hurdles – Nick Franitti, Ellwood City, 15.36
  • 5th place: Discus – Carson Emerick, Riverside, 141’11”
  • 7th place: 3200M run Brooke Wissinger, Riverside, 12:02.37
  • 8th place: Discus – Carlee Crawford 102’1″ (won medal but did not qualify for the PIAA Championship while still setting a PR)
