On Your Mark, Get Ready, Go! Western PA Soap Box Derby Is Next Month

Western PA Soap Box Derby, a fun family event, is Saturday June 3rd, 2023 in Ambridge, PA on 14th Street.

Each year any child between the ages of 7 and 18 race down the hill in hopes of winning their way to the All American Championship in Akron Ohio in July and race against other racers from all over America. There they will compete against other drivers to win the world championship and be awarded scholarship money.

Families are their biggest rooting section on race day, and throughout the entire process to reach Race Day.

Each driver (with adult supervision) builds their derby car from kits that they must purchase from the All American. Everything is in those kits down to the screws and bolts.

Our local is participating in 3 different classes this year. Stock Class, Super Stock Class, and for the first time, Masters Class. Because every car in each class is the exact same build and weight, weights and drivers in each vehicle will be the same total.

The derby is a double elimination race. Each driver goes down the hill in their “heat” with a partner. Once they reach the bottom of the hill, they return to the top to the top of the hill with the same partner, but they switch lanes. The object is to get the best over all time. The winner then moves over the the “Winners Bracket”. The other driver then moves over to the ” Challengers Bracket”. Every driver goes down the hill at least 4 times. The overall winner could run through the entire “Challengers Bracket” and end up being the Champion who moves on to Akron.

The Champion drivers spend an entire week with an experience that they and their families will never forget.

Soap Box Derby Racing Day is a family event. Its a free event for families and individuals to cheer on the drivers on Race Day. Once a driver goes down the hill and catches “Derby Fever”, they look forward to the next years race with excitement.

The Western PA Soap Box Derby, Ambridge PA is a 501 non profit organization that serves the 5 County region of Beaver, Butler, Lawrence, Mercer, and Allegheny Counties. We believe every child should be given a chance to race, by offering free registration to one or two low income families each year.
