Two Ellwood City wrestlers have qualified for upcoming wrestling tournaments this weekend.
Junior high wrestler Cheyenne Berglund (96 pounds) will compete in the 9th Annual PA Junior High State Championship Tournament in Johnstown, PA this weekend after a qualifying performance last weekend.
“Cheyenne has grown over the year and is highly intelligent and is picking up more technique, she has had an excellent season.” says coach John Fleming. “She’s willing to add moves to her arsenal and I feel that will really help her growth in this sport.”
For Berglund, this will be a second go-round at states as she qualified to advance once before but was unable to because it was canceled due to COVID.
Fleming looks forward to her coming up to the varsity level next year.
“She has beaten several boys this year,” adds Fleming. “Her work ethic in the room is fantastic.”
Sophomore varsity wrestler Logan Shriver used his performance at the 2023 7-AA districts at Chartiers Valley last weekend to qualify for the South West AA Regionals this weekend.
The 107-pound wrestler picked up two victories in consolation rounds after falling in an opening round match. Shriver pinned Isabella McNutt (Hampton), at 0:52 in consolation round 1 and earned an 8-5 decision victory over James Couch (Freedom Area) in the consolation round 3.
Shriver was then defeated by Darius Simmons (Burgettstown) in the consolation round 3 before falling the in Seventh Place match by decision to Alex Medlen (Beth-Center).
The 2-3 overall performance by Shriver earned him a spot in the regionals. Shriver will enter the regionals with a 21-13 record and face Zach Burch of Bedford.
The South West AA Regionals will be held at Altoona HS beginning on Friday, March 3. Shriver will be the lone representative for Ellwood City who is among 67 participating schools. [VIEW FULL BRACKET]
