A noted weather enthusiast Aaron Smith who hails from South Carolina posted a photo and video of a curious weather phenomenon that appeared in the Ellwood City skies overnight Friday.

In the video taken on Route 351 River Road facing west, numerous light pillars are visible in the distance.

Light pillars, or columns of light beaming to the sky, are a spectacle that awes onlookers. Conditions must be just right for these stunning lights to form. Light pillars are an optical phenomenon caused when light is refracted by ice crystals. These lights tend to take on the color of the light source.

According to his social media postings, Smith was traveling to Pittsburgh to help a friend move when he captured the lighting spectacle in Ellwood City.
