Sophomore Caitlin Kreitzer scored a career high 18 points to lead the Lady Wolverines to a 52-33 road victory over Riverside on Monday evening.
The victory capped a season sweep in the Riv-Ell series as Ellwood City earned a home victory earlier in January.
On Monday, Kreitzer, who connected on two 3-pointers, was among three Wolverines in double figures. Claire Noble (14 points, 1 3-pointer, 5-6 FTs) and Aliya Garroway (12 points, 2 3-pointers, 4-7 FTs) each chipped in for the Wolverines in their victory.
Ellwood City trailed early in the rivalry contest, chasing a 2 point deficit entering the second quarter but rebounded and entered the half ahead 24-21. The Wolverines posted a 16-point third quarter to surge ahead with a ten point cushion entering the final frame.
Panthers (4-12 Overall, 1-6 Section 3A-1) sharp-shooter Gina Carr scored a team-high 18 points in defeat. Carr connected on six 3-pointers. Riverside will have two away games remaining before their final home game versus Mohawk on Thursday, February 9th.
Ellwood City, now 8-10 overall (2-5 Section 3A-1) will next host Union tonight and Mohawk on Thursday before turning their attention to section foe Beaver Falls next Monday. The game could have playoff implications as both teams sit tied for fourth place and hold identical section records and only the top four teams from the section will make the playoffs.
The boys will be pitted in their rivalry rematch on Friday, February 10th with a 7:30 p.m. varsity tip at Riverside. The Panthers knocked off the Wolverines in overtime earlier this month. Both teams current are tied with four wins in section play.
