The Ellwood City Wrestling Team participated in the Sharpsville Walleye Duals this past week and showed some flare.
The Wolverines picked up their first dual meet victory of the season with a 39-30 victory over Brockway, and finished the duals 1-4 as a team.
“The kids came together as a team,” said head coach John Fleming.
Ben Gallenz earned a decision victory to earn points for the the Wolverines. Ryan Fry (215 lb), Nicholas Coonfare (285 lb), and Maurice (133 lb) were defeated, but Ellwood City earned enough points for the team victory over Brockway.
Chris Quintanilla (172 lb) earned a victory by fall over Harbor Creek, earning praise from his coach.
“Chris bumped up to 172 lbs and was losing 16-2 with :40 seconds left and hit a move we’ve practiced for a while now and got the win,” says Fleming. “It really got the team fired up.”
The Wolverines fell to Harbor Creek 51-18.
Quintanilla, Gallenz, Derek Allen (114 lb) and Gavin McClure (145 lb) all earned victories against Mercer Area, but the Wolverines team was defeated.
McClure earned the only victory for Ellwood City in its 42-24 defeat versus Perry.
Shriver, Gallenz, Quintanilla earned victories for Ellwood City in its 36-30 defeat versus Slippery Rock to round out the duals.
“Overall we are a young team composed of mostly first and second year wrestlers but we are learning and improving each week,” says the coach.
The Wolverines next will host a match versus Summit Academy on Wednesday, December 21st at 7:00 p.m.
