The Wilmington Hockey team defeated Central Valley 9-5 at Hess Ice Rink Monday evening, earning its first victory of the young season.
On Monday, Andrew Cartwright (Union) and Noah King (Wilmington) each collected five points to lead Wilmington offensive charge.
King got the only goal in the first period on an assist from Cartwright while the second period saw the Hounds get goals from Cartwright, assisted by Sean Carmichael (New Castle) and Davis Phanco (Wilmington), Nate Pitzer (New Castle) assisted by Tucker Ligo (Union), and Carmichael with two goals, one assisted by Alex Rodgers (New Castle) and the other assisted by Cartwright.
The second period ended with Wilmington with a 5-4 lead. The Hounds put 4 more goals on the board to pull away in the third.
The goal scorers were Akito Hatch (Wilmington) from King and Beckett Miller (Wilmington), Cartwright assists to Phanco and King, King from Mitchell Covert (Ellwood City), and Cartwright with the hat trick goal to finish off the scoring with the assist from King.
Tagg Walker (Wilmington) got the win in net stopping 19 of 24 shots.
The co-op program how holds a 1-3 record and will next travel to Printscape Arena at Southpointe on Tuesday, November 1st to play Trinity. The Hounds finished last season with an 11-5-2 regular season record before falling in the PIHL semifinals in March.
Joining Covert on the Hounds are four other players from Ellwood City School District.
Senior Gage Miller is one of the Varsity alternate captains, junior Blake Mravintz (Elwood City/LCCTC), and freshmen Craig Patterson and Tye Tomak.
Miller is a top players but is currently recovering from surgery on a broken wrist according to Assistant Coach Jeffrey Pitzer
“We hope to have him back in a few weeks,” adds Pitzer.
Mravintz and Tomak are both integral forwards on the JV team and have had contributed at the Varsity level as well. Patterson is one of two JV goalies and has dressed as backup goalie for multiple varsity games.
