ECASD Board of Directors Announce Back To School Event, Recognize Police Department

“Every kid is one caring adult away from being a success story,” According to Josh Shipp, award-winning speaker and bestselling author.

The Ellwood City Area School District and its Board of Directors announced during Thursday evening’s board meeting that they will welcome Shipp and his words of wisdom during a Back to School Event on August 22 at 5:30 p.m. in the Lincoln High School Cafeteria. There will be a free pasta dinner and Shipp will talk about “The importance of one caring adult in a child’s life.”

Free childcare will be provided during the event. The event is an initiative of the Ellwood City Excellence Project, which this year will focus on climate and culture.

According to his website, Josh Shipp “should be dead, in jail, or homeless. But his success as a preeminent author, speaker, and global youth empowerment expert is living proof of the power of one caring adult.”

Shipp is renowned for the documentary TV series on A&E that followed his groundbreaking work with youth and families. In addition, he has written two national bestsellers to date, “The Grown-Up’s Guide to Teenage Humans” – winner of the Nautilus Gold Award for Parenting & Family – and “The Teen’s Guide to World Domination.”

He is regularly called on by OPRAH, CNN, FOX, The New York Times, 20/20, Good Morning America, and others to provide commentary on common challenges faced by parents and teachers.

He has keynoted events for countless groups of parents, educators, and social workers – with audiences as large as 55,000 – and to date has spoken live in front of more than two million people.

“We encourage all parents to attend, and all community members are also welcome,” said Superintendent Wesley Shipley.

Shipley also announced that the District’s Helling Stadium Project is slated to be completed in late September, and the field could possibly host two home games this upcoming season. Paul Pishioneri, director of facilities, reported that the buildings surrounding the stadium have all been painted and a large portion of the groundwork has been completed.

The board thanked the Ellwood City Police Department for the donation of a Bean Bag Gun Kit. A bean bag round, is a type of baton round, fired from a shotgun, and used for less lethal apprehension of suspects. The board recognized the department as being instrumental in the help of the planning of the school’s safety and security procedures.

Janine Hindman spoke during the public (visitor’s section) and expressed her concern with the aging and mismatched soccer uniforms. She said some pieces of the uniforms have been used for so long that they are dry rotting.

Board President, Jean Biehls, vowed the board will work to find a way to properly outfit the team.

“They need to be attired in proper gear to represent us,” Biehls said.
