In a thrilling series of events, the Ellwood City Wolverines were finally defeated on a walk-off hit on Wednesday while the Wolverines Junior High Softball team cruised to victory.
Wolverines Goes Down On Final Play Against Hopewell
After rallying to two runs in the top half of the seventh inning on Wednesday, the Wolverines were felled by a walk-off single in the bottom of the frame and were defeated 4-3 by Hopewell.
The Vikings Chris Mullins singled on a 1-0 count, scoring the game deciding run.
Joseph Roth, Alexander Roth, and Bucky Biskup each collected one hit to lead an Ellwood City offense who was held to three singles on the afternoon by two Hopewell pitchers.
Landen Fox earned the victory on the pitcher’s mound for Hopewell in relief of starter, Anthony LaSala. Fox allowed two hits and two runs over one inning, striking out two and walking one. LaSala started the game and lasted six innings, allowing one hit and one run while striking out nine.
Joseph Roth took the loss for Ellwood City (3-5 Overall, 3-2 Section) in relief of Nick Magnifico. Roth went one and one-third innings, allowing two runs on four hits, striking out three and walking zero. Magnifico started the game for Ellwood City and allowed five hits and two runs over five innings, striking out seven.
Hopewell racked up nine hits on the day. Mullins, Stephen Slate, and Ty Eberhardt each managed multiple hits for Hopewell. Isaiah Lutz, Alexander Roth, Magnifico, and Carter Lutz all swiped stolen bases for the Wolverines in defeat.
In what amounted to a collective pitchers dual, teams combined for 21 strikeouts on the afternoon, and each team will get their hand at redemption on Thursday when the two team square off again at Ellwood City.
Ellwood City Junior High Softball Cruses to Victory
The Ellwood City Junior High Softball team posted 21 runs over four innings to run away with a 21-6 mercy-rule victory of host Riverside on Wednesday.
The Wolverines scored in the first four innings, including a 10-run fourth inning, to secure the victory.
Four Wolverines collected multiple hits – Lena Lucarelli, Kennedy Brown, Rylee Prestopine, and Natalie Gillin – while Kiley LeViere slugged a homerun on the afternoon. Brown scored four times while three other Wolverines crossed home plate three times each.
Brown, Gillin, Dakota Hicks (2), Kaylee Palombi, Lucarelli (2), and Amber McQuistion all swiped bases to help power the offense.
Ellwood City Tennis Hosting Final Match of Season Thursday
The Ellwood City tennis team (3-4 Overall) will host its final match of season on Thursday 4/21 against Ambridge at 3:30 PM at the Ewing Park Tennis Courts.
The Wolverines were last defeated by Central Valley on Monday at Brady’s Run.
