SOFTBALL: Lady Wolverines Edge Union 8-7, Lady Panthers Shut Out Shenango

WOLVERINES WIN NAILBITER OVER UNION

There’s nothing better than a close game with controversy early in the season. The Lady Wolverines traveled to Union yesterday and came home with a 8-7 victory. The outcome wasn’t determined until an interference call against Union on the game’s final play.

Ellwood City put two on the board in the first by way of a Aliya Garroway sacrifice fly and Julia Nardone RBI double and expanded its lead to 4-0 in the top half of the second inning. Garroway collected a RBI single and Mollie Street laced a RBI double to score Garroway.

Union cut the lead in half as they scored two runs in their half of the second inning. A double and three singles made the score 4-2.

The teams exchanged runs in the third inning before Ellwood City was able to put two more runs on the board in the fourth inning.

Garroway collected her third run producing hit to plate Nardone and later scored on a wild pitch to push the Wolverines ahead 7-3.

After Ellwood City went down in order in the fifth, Union made it 7-6 on a walk, a two run homer, a single, and two errors.

The Wolverines made it 8-6 in the seventh as Angie Nardone walked and later scored on two consecutive wild pitches to set up the fireworks in Union’s half of the seventh.

As was the theme for the day, Union fought until the very end. Julia Nardone got the first two outs via strikeout and a flyout to Wehman in center field. The Scotties made it 8-7 on back to back doubles to put the tying run on second with two outs. A ground ball got by Servick at shortstop but the baserunner was ruled out for interfering with Servick and the Lady Wolverines escaped with an 8-7 victory.

Garroway led the offense with two singles and two RBIs. Angie Nardone singled while Street and Julia Nardone added doubles. Angie Nardone did her job from the lead off spot as she scored three times. Garroway scored twice and Servick, Wehman, and Street each scored once. Street, Kalantzis, and Julia Nardone contributed rbi’s as well. Julia Nardone got the win in the circle as she scattered 9 hits in the complete game victory. She yielded 5 earned runs as she fanned 6 and walked 3.

The Lady Wolverines will look to go 4-0, 2-0 in the section as they travel to Quaker Valley Wednesday for a 4:15 start in Sewickley.
