Led by two relay state titles and a dominating individual performance by Joseph Roth, Riverside finished second overall in the Class-2A PIAA Swimming Championships at Bucknell University.
On Friday, the Panther relay team collected a state title in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team, consisting of Ryan Turner, Sam Kline, and brothers Joseph and Alexander Roth, finished with a time of 1:25.86 with individual splits of 21.24 (J. Roth) 21.39 (Kline) 22.07 (Turner) 21.16 (A. Roth).
The fearsome foursome collected its second state title on Saturday with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The first place time of 3:09.95 was put together with splits of 46.49 (J. Roth) 49.81 (Kline) 47.27 (Turner) 46.38 (A. Roth).
Individually, the sophomore sensation Joseph Roth earned a state title and state record with his 100-yard backstroke performance on Saturday.
Roth finished his 100-yard heat with an outstanding time of 48.44 to earn the victory by over 1.5 seconds.
The time is a new Pennsylvania state high school record. (VIDEO BELOW)
According to result sheets made available by the PIAA, the NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations) record in the event is held by Ryan Murphy, of Florida, with a time of 45.34, set in 2012. Murphy, as some may recall, is a 4-time Olympic gold medalist and the world-record holder in the men’s 100-meter backstroke.
Led by the two relay state titles and Roth’s individual performances, Riverside finished second in the team standings with 148 points. Joseph Roth also finished second in the 50-yard backstroke on Friday. Alex Roth finished in 7th place in both the 100 Free and 200 Free while Ryan Turner finished in 12th place. in 12th place in the 100 Free and 14th the 200 Free.
Cathedral Prep from District 10 won the state title with 196 points.
