Ellwood City came out firing from deep Monday night as they easily ousted visiting Summit Academy 72-42 in the opening round of the WPIAL Class-3A Playoffs Monday night.
The Wolverines finished with 14 3-pointers in the contest, including five in a 23-point first quarter outburst. Ellwood City led by a dozen after the first quarter and never looked back.
The sound victory was aided by great passing (25 assists), shooting (aforementioned 14 3-pointers), and balanced scoring (four players with 10+ points).
Senior Alexander Roth connected on five first half triples en route to a team-high 23 points (7 3-pointers, seven assists, two steals) to lead Ellwood City.
Brother Joseph posted a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds, Caden Crizer, making his first start, scored 12 points (2 3-pointers), and Steve Antuono finished with 10 points (2 3-pointers, eight assists).
Senior Milo Sesti chipped in with six points (2 3-pointers), six assists, and two steals.
Kylee Davenport scored a game-high 25 points in defeat for Summit Academy.
The fast paced game only featured a combined six free throw attempts by both teams.
Ellwood City (21-2 overall) will host its quarterfinal match-up against #8 Avonworth (16-6 overall) on Thursday at Lincoln High School. The Antelopes rolled past Ligonier Valley 64-36 in its opening round contest. Freshman Rowan Carmichael led all scorers with 23 points.
#4 seed Seton LaSalle was upset in its opening round contest which could pit the Wolverines in a rematch against #5 seed South Allegheny in the WPIAL
semifinals should both team advance on Thursday. Ellwood City defeated South Allegheny last year in the championship game.
