Antuono Hits 1,000 Career Points, Wolverines Lose At Buzzer

Steve Antuono, Jr. hit a career scoring milestone Monday night in front of a home crowd, netting his 1,000th career point at the free throw line in the third quarter of the Wolverines non-section contest versus Union Area.

However, Ellwood City was felled by a buzzer beating shot, one so close the referees converged before awarding the points to the visiting Scotties who escaped with a 59-58 victory over the Wolverines.

Antuono scored a team-high 22 points including nine in the final quarter that pulled the Wolverines back from a late deficit.

Alexander Roth nailed two free throws with under a minute to go to give Ellwood City its first lead of the 4th quarter.  After a Union miss and an Ellwood City turnover, a last second shot by Union’s Matt Stanley fell short, but grazed the rim enough to find the hands of his brother Mark who earned the game-winning putback as time expired.

Matt Stanley led all scorers with 28 points (three 3-pointers, 9-12 FTs) for Union Area who improved to 5-0 overall on the young season.  The Scotties connected on 10 3-pointers in the victory.

Alexander Roth finished with 16 points while brother Joseph scored 14 points (10-13 FTs) and pulled down 16 rebounds in defeat.

The game was fast paced in a 34-34 first half, but slowed in a third quarter that saw Union pull ahead 43-40 entering the final frame.  The Wolverines (3-2 overall) next host Freedom Area at home on Wednesday evening with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
