Anthony (Tony) F. Scala, 87 of Harrisburg, PA, formally of Ellwood City, PA passed away peacefully, at UPMC Community Osteopathic Hospital surrounded by his family on September 16, 2021, after an unexpected battle with cancer.
Tony was born in Ellwood City, PA, to the late Frederick and Felicia (Fabian) Scala. He graduated from Lincoln High School and attended the Police Academy in Hershey, PA. On August 18th, 1956, he married his wife Janet who survives at home and has remained his sweetheart of 65 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Frederick (Ricky) Scala and Joseph Scala, sister Ann Wallace and his father and mother-in-law Richard and Marion Means all of Ellwood City. He is survived by his wife Janet and four children, Tanya (Steve) Dayton of Harrisburg, Rick (Tracy) Scala of State College, Shelley Scala of Harrisburg, and Marcy (John) Hozella of Bethal Park. He is also survived by sister-in-law Kathryn (Ralph) DeChicko of Beaver Falls, and brother-in-law Chuck (Betsy) Means of Ellwood City, and sister-in-law Darlene Scala of Ellwood City. Tony also leaves behind ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
In Ellwood City, Tony owned the Ewing Park Service Station, T&S Bike and Raceways, and was a Police Officer for the City from 1960 to 1970. Tony joined the state’s drug law enforcement as an investigator, and then was the Drug Bureau’s Regional Director. He then joined the Attorney General’s Office Narcotics Unit where he was named Director of Drug Control for the State of PA in 1978. He retired in 1995. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, The Pennsylvania Narcotics Association, Chief of Police, and the Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club. He and Janet loved riding their Harley well into their eighties and were snowbirds living winters in Florida for 25 years. Tony enjoyed cooking, especially homemade pizza, growing garlic and hot peppers, and telling stories.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Central PA; 1320 Linglestown Rd, Harrisburg, PA 17110. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Hoover Funeral Home, 6011 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, PA 17112.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the excellent care and compassion provided by the staff of UPMC Community Osteopathic Hospital and Hospice of Central PA. Services will be private at the request of the family.
