Masks or No Masks: ECASD Board to Vote Thursday

A plan to return to school mask free for Ellwood City Area School District students will be up for vote during next week’s Board of Directors meeting.

There will be one caveat to the mask-free plan: Students will be required to wear masks while riding the bus to and from school.

This is the proposed plan introduced by District Superintendent Dr. Wesley Shipley. Shipley asked the board during Thursday’s committee meeting to approve the plan.

The reason for the consideration of masks on busses is based on a federal mandate where masks are required on mass transit.

On January 29, 2021, Centers for Disease Control (CDC) issued an Order that required face masks to be worn by all people while on public transportation (which included all passengers and all personnel operating conveyances) traveling into, within, or out of the United States and U.S. territories.

Shipley said that administration and staff want to make the return to school as normal as possible.

“We want to treat school like school again,” he said.

Shipley said should a student or employee wish to wear a mask, they are more than welcome to do so.

Shipley said should there be guidance by the CDC to return to mask wearing and social distancing, the district will comply with any mandates.

The board will vote during its voting meeting on August 12 at 7 p.m.
