Cambridge Retirement Living To Host Community Blood Drive

Your blood can save as many as three patients’ lives.

This is serious. There’s a critical blood shortage and blood donations are being distributed to hospital patients faster than donors are giving. These patients need help to recruit blood donors and rebuild the blood supply to sufficient levels.

Join Cambridge Retirement Living for their Cambridge Pointe Community Blood Drive on Thursday, July 8, 2021 from 11:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m.  The bloodmobile will be located at 160 Chapel Road, Beaver, PA 15009.

To make an appointment please visit www.vitalant.org and click the “Log In” button. On the new window, choose Donor Login (previous donor) or New Donor (haven’t donated with Vitalant before), and search with
group code W481, or call 412.209.7000 or 877.258.4825 or Rachel at 412.736.5506.  Masks are required and appointments are recommended.

When you donate at this Save Lives – Feed Families blood drive, a contribution will be made on your behalf to the Salvation Army to help feed as many as 25 families in need. (Funding made possible by the Blood Science Foundation)  If you donate any time between June 30 to July 6 you can earn a Limited-Edition T-shirt! Donors receive a colorful summer tee as thanks for helping patients over the holiday.

To save time, complete your health history questionnaire online on the same day as your donation. Go to www.vitalant.org, select Donate, then Health History Questionnaire and start your questions.

“Vitalant currently has less than a four-day supply of most blood types available, and less than a two-day supply of type O blood,” says Rachel Bennett, Donor Recruitment Representative at Vitalant. “We strive to always keep a four-day supply on hand to meet the needs of patients every day and be prepared for emergencies that would require significant volumes of donated blood products.

Type O is what’s often used in trauma situations, especially type O negative, because it can be transfused to patients with any blood type in an emergency room setting.

Blood donations fell more than 4,000 short of the need in May, while the need for blood has increased. Blood drive cancellations forced by COVID-19 challenges continue to affect donation rates. In fact, anticipated uncollected donations from business-hosted blood drive cancellations reached a four-month high of more than 6,200 blood donations in June.

“That’s why it’s so important to patient care for generous donors to make an appointment now to give in the coming days or weeks at a donation center or another community blood drive,” said Cliff Numark, Vitalant’s senior vice president of donor services and chief of marketing.

“A drop in donations over any period of time is concerning, but especially right now when the supply is already low,” said Ralph Vassallo, MD, Vitalant’s chief medical and scientific officer. “Blood and platelet donations are needed now and throughout the summer to prevent delays in lifesaving patient care.”
